Clarendon-half 2007 rank stats:
Men total: 382, Men over 2.23: 315, Men under 2.23: 67
Wmn total: 227 Wmn over 2.23: 136 Wmn under 2.23: 90
TOTAL: 609
Faster than me: 451 (74%)
Slower than me: 157 (26%)

So I’m barely out of the lowest quartile, with 74% of the field faster than me!

If I’d hit my target time of 2:10 there would be 40% of the field would have been faster and 60% would have been slower, lots of people in the intervening 13mins!!

Clarendon was magnificent! Bought inov-8 roclites at c18:00 on Saturday night and ran without a single blister! Course was muddy, and busy but the views were gorgeous, although the narrow pathways made it difficult to overtake walkers going up the hill. Felt sorry for the fast marathoners who were having to battle their way through the half-marathon field.

Some congestion as we all tried to get over a single stile [http://www.putlearningfirst.com/walking/grape/stile.jpg] but everyone was very good natured and jokey about it.

Forgot to check the stopwatch when going through the finish gate, but time as c2:23. Very pleased as only 13mins off target time and sub 2hr would be tough with all those walkers, mud and hills. Very surprised that I felt okay to keep motoring up the hill when so many where walking, and at other points of the race when men where stopping to walk I felt fine to go – was paranoid that they knew something I didn’t and I’d keel over at 10miles! but felt good and strong the whole way around, bouyed by just how great the views and the country running was. people were quite friendly, although I didn’t talk to anyone personally. Organisation at the start was ok although people where wondering why you couldn’t have recieved number in the post.

Post race – had no idea where to collect medal so gave up, apparently people where waiting up to 40mins and feeling cross and tired so just as well I didn’t try.

Felt sorry for the elite marathoners who tried to get through the half marathon field, esp at the stile, so where having to push selves into hedgerows to let them get through.

HR: was in zone 3 almost the entire journey although would estimate I was running at between pace zones 1 and 2 in terms of distance covered, and even achieved a new HRmax of 199! some people were really panting and wheezing their way around and my breathing was even and controlled, except maybe up Farley Mount, but never will I feel bad at the slow running and being taken over by everyone – felt very satisfying to overtake so many people on the course! According to last year’s table, I’d be in the lower 50% but around the middle of the table (although I’ve no idea how they could know what time one went through the start gate (and we walked the first 100m to the fields).

Feel quite achy today, especially my quads so working from home.

nb: was craving crisps after the race, and only had cake – too much sugar at once! Also drank ribena at the start.
